Hello, there.
Welcome to my portfolio, I'm Samantha Covell. I am a graduate of Western Michigan University with a Bachelor of Science in Fashion Design and Development. I also have an associate of Arts in Liberal Arts from Kalamazoo Valley Community College.
My love for fashion is all encompassing, from the process of thinking up new designs to creating and perfecting the patterns, to selecting fabric and notions, and ultimately sewing the final piece. I enjoy each part of the process and take great pride in the pieces that I have had a hand in creating.
I have interned at a local tailor shop in Kalamazoo where I was exposed to different kinds of problem solving in order to best work with the clients that would come in. I worked on simple issues such as minor mending and hemming as well as larger alterations such as taking in waistlines, shortening sleeves, and letting out seams. While at the tailor shop, I also created custom bowties for the clients who needed the perfect topper for their immaculately fit suits. I worked directly with the clients to source fabrics that worked for the look they were going for.
While completing my Bachelor, I was given the opportunity to be a Teaching Assistant. In this role, my responsibilities ranged from keeping open lab hours, performing minor machine maintenance, and ensuring proper procedures were followed by all students. Additionally, I was responsible for working in the Fashion Program's Resource Room and would help organize donated fabrics and notions in a neat and properly categorized manner.
When I'm not sewing, I love gardening, reading, painting, and spending time with my dog, Stella. Also, a true Michigander, I enjoy ice skating as often as possible in the winter and paddleboarding in the summer. I am an avid thrifter who loves the thrill of hunting for my next vintage find, including finding my favorite secondhand pieces while traveling in Paris.
Please enjoy my portfolio, which I am always updating and adding to.
